What is the NewCities Initiative?
In 2001, NewCities President and founder, Sylvia Lovely, came to realize that citizens are the missing element when it comes to community and economic development. “How can we build prosperous communities if citizens are not involved in the process?” she asked. And with that realization, the NewCities Institute was created.
With the development of the 12 Principles of Community Building, the next task became to test the theory in an actual city. Thus, the NewCities Initiative became the incubator for growing, tweaking, and experimenting with cities and communities that were ready to make some intentional choices about their economic and social prosperity.
The NewCities Initiative is an intensive effort between the NewCities Institute and a community to engage the community’s citizens to build a roadmap for the future. It is more than visioning and strategic planning. It is more than facilitation. The NewCities Initiative is about process and substantive change that ensures the long-term vitality of a community long after we’re gone. The NewCities Initiative is about building economic and social prosperity from the bottom up. We engage, listen, empower, envision, distill values, innovate, and act! That’s the NewCities “way” to unleash the citizens’ power for creating social and economic wealth under the new rules of the 21st century global economy. A global strategy begins with local people in their own local community.
Why is the NewCities Initiative important to YOUR community?
A city MUST change the things it can to keep and attract people and business. It’s a combination of knowing what you would like to have and recognizing the opportunities to get there.
Someone once said: “You can solve the challenges facing your community’s future. All it takes is putting your heads together!” Thus, a community has to come together to intentionally build a great place to live and do business.
